Contractor of the Month 3 in a Row Frascati Shopping Centre

Suir Engineering have been awarded “Contractor of the Month” for the last 3 months (November, December and January) by Collen Construction at Frascati Shopping Centre Redevelopment Project.

The award was passed onto our sub-contractors on each and every occasion as without their hard work, attention to detail & site wide focus on Safety then Suir Engineering would not have won these awards. Our Sub Contractors are our face on the ground and we are judged by their performance. Therefore it is only right that we acknowledge their hard work and commitment to delivering a first class job.

For this reason Eugene O’Loughlin our Project Manager asked young Aaron Keeler ( a second year apprentice) to accept the award for January on Suir Engineering’s behalf as he has excelled during his time on Frascati Shopping Centre.

WIT ‘Last Planner System’ Event

Suir engineering supporting the WIT 'Last Planner System' Event

Suir Engineering were delighted to support  the  ‘Last Planner System’ event hosted by WIT. It was a terrific opportunity for us to join WIT School of Engineering faculty and students in their engagement with Professor Glenn Ballard from the University of California at Berkeley (a co-founder of the Lean Construction Institute (LCI USA) and the International Group for Lean Construction (IGLC), and one of the co-architects of the Last Planner System and Lean Project Delivery System); along with Professor Christine Pasquire from NTU (Founder and Head of the Lean Project Management Research Centre, and core member of LCI UK and the IGLC); and Paul Ebbs from NTU (co-founder of Lean Construction Ireland and now research associate with Professor Pasquire).

It was great to see the engagement and enthusiasm for Lean Construction amongst the 2nd year students from BSc (Hons) in Construction Management & Engineering; BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying; and BEng in Civil Engineering, working in groups with us .

Well done to all involved and thanks to Ann Power WIT school of Engineering for the photographs of the day

Fire Brigade Safety Demonstration

Three demonstrations were carried out today by the fire brigade relating to “Fire Safety in the Home”. The video above was taken at the Alexion Site demonstration this morning.
It acted a reminder to all of us of the need to practice safety in the home as well as in work, especially at this time of the year and was well received by all who attended.
It was part of a site wide initiative that has been ongoing for the past four weeks, which was organised by all the contractor safety departments.

Suir Engineering Wins Imtech Group HSE Award for 2017

Suir Engineering recently won the Imtech Group Safety Award 2017. Paul Kavanagh, Group CEO, announced the winner at the Annual Imtech Conference last week. Each business was asked to nominate a project or team that had done something to improve HSE in the Business. The criteria stated that the winning entry must be able to demonstrate the following:

Success – e.g. improvement in performance in terms of culture, better engagement, positive feedback from stakeholders, KPI improvement, saving of time or money, fewer injuries etc.
A Better Experience – for employees or sub-contractors or others.
Culture and behaviours – clear evidence of strong HSE cultures and behaviours such as HSE visibility, engagement with people, an open and transparent culture, workplaces that look and feel like Imtech workplaces, delivery of required standards, going over and above, consistently good performance.
An innovative idea – especially one that has been shared widely, inside the Business Unit or with other Businesses in the Group.

Suir’s entry came from the BMS team who developed a safety system for the safe use of hand held power tools, following a number of near misses and incidents on site. Based on these incidents, the schedule pressures and the inherent dangers associated with the number of site personnel Suir Engineering had at any one time (peaking at 170 direct employees plus subcontractors) Suir Engineering site and safety management developed a dedicated system to minimise the associated risks. This system involved the following steps:

SOP’s for every plant and equipment that Suir employees were using on the site ranging from MEWPs, harnesses, drills, grinders, bench drills to knifes and hydraulic cable cutters.
Implementation of the SOPs through twice weekly, hour long, on-site training sessions carried out by each Supervisor and Safety showing their crews how to use each piece of equipment, Including the correct use and associated hazards.
Following each demonstration by supervision, each Suir employee was asked to demonstrate how to use the piece of equipment, the correct PPE to be worn and identify the hazards.
Assessment by Supervision and Safety would then verify safe appropriate use.
Special attention was given to general operatives and apprentices to ensure full understanding of operation and maintaining the plant in addition to tool safety. Given this may have been the first time some of these operatives may have used these devices, it was critical that the operational requirements and hazards were fully understood.

Well done to everyone that was involved in the safety submission and for their dedication in continually seeking out ways to improve our safety standards. In particular a special thanks must go to Dora Kinsella (Safety Officer), Eimear Kneafsey (Safety Officer), Sinead Dowd (Safety Officer), Mark Duffy (Project Manager) and Rob McGauley (Supervisor) and all of the team in BMS.

MSD Brinny – Right First Time Rewards

Suir eng onsite at MSD Brinny project

Having conducted weekly quality walks between Suir and site CMT and emphasis placed on first of kinds approved prior to installation, Suir were able to identify, control and reduce common snags at an early stage in the project.
Tool box talks were conducted with the site team to emphasise the difference between unacceptable poor workmanship and unavoidable snags.
A points system was introduced on the project by Suir to reward an individual on completion of an installation with zero snags recorded.
This has given rise to a snag free culture within Suir’s team on Project Lion- MSD Brinny, helping to achieve mechanical completion with minimal rework’’
